President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 that designates May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Thousands of police officers, family members and supporters convene on Washington DC every year to pay respects to those brave men and women who have lost their lives while protecting their fellow citizens. This date took on local significance in Posey County some 20 years ago when members of Mount Vernon FOP Lodge 133 put together a memorial service to honor those who died while in active duty. The tradition has grown throughout the years. If you hunted any wild game species in Indiana this past season, did you know all the wildlife statutes before going afield? Unless you were willing and able to go online, you probably didn't read all the do's, don'ts and caveats that can get you tickets, fines, jail time and license forfeiture. Beginning in early 2010, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources opted not to print complete Hunting Guide Books. A few rule sheets were distributed, and regulations were psoted on the IDNR website.
After the initial public outcry forced the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to rethink its proposals, the IDNR offered up new ones. The department's new objective is deer herd reduction in a "strategically targeted manner. The IDNR chose to use the computer to get news out rather than print and distribute much-needed state hunting and fishing guide books with seasons, rules and regulations. In answer to reader requests, here is the most recent IDNR update on proposed deer hunting rules and regulations
