GREEN BAY, Wis., June 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) chairman Ernie Stevens Jr. today promoted the economic impact of Indian gaming on the American economy while addressing the issue of regulation during his keynote address at the annual conference of the National Congress of American Indians in Green Bay, Wis.
Indian gaming has provided over 550,000 jobs nationwide and over $8 billion in federal, state and local tax revenues," said Stevens. The private residence of Booker Prize winning Indian writer and novelist Arundhati Roy was besieged and attacked by a mob of right- wing protesters and supporters of India's nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday, following the announcement Friday that officials appointed by the nation's ruling Indian National Congress Party would not prosecute the author of "The God Of Small Things" for remarks she made at a seminar in New Delhi last month.
The author was not at home at the time of the incident, though her husband Pradip Krishen was, and reported that television crews and journalists for India's right-wing media anticipated the attack and preceded the arrival of the protestors at the residence by several minutes.

The Indian National Congress party was founded in 1885, which petitioned the British for political and administrative reform. Mohandas Gandhi in the 1920s reorganized the party to resist the British rule and it became the party of Indian national independence. After the second world war, it took charge of the central government and became the national party, controlling the central government for all but six year. After 50 years of rule, the Congress party has been replaced by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party .

Two major Native American organizations, the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) and the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), and several individual Indian tribes have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the relief of victims of this year's Gulf hurricanes, Katrina and Rita. Tribes assisting the NIGA/NCAI efforts with major donations include the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians of California and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
