The process of introducing new and phasing out old products is called product rollover. This paper considers a periodic-review inventory system consisting of a manufacturer and a retailer, where the manufacturer introduces new and improved products over an infinite planning horizon using the solo-roll strategy. We consider two scenarios: (1) the manufacturer does not share the upstream information about new-product introduction with the retailer and (2) the manufacturer shares the information. For each scenario, we first derive the decentralized ordering policy and the system-optimal ordering policy with given cost parameters. We then devise an optimal supply chain contract that coordinates the inventory system. We demonstrate that when the inventory system is coordinated, information s...

Over the past two to three decades economics has played an increasingly important role in the development of U.S. antitrust enforcement and policy. This essay first reviews the major facets of U.S. antitrust enforcement and next reviews the ways in which economics - starting from a low base - has grown in importance in antitrust. The essay then highlights three antitrust areas in which the influence of economics has had the greatest influence: merger analysis, vertical relationships, and predatory pricing. The essay concludes with the identification of four antitrust areas where further economics analysis could have high returns.

This paper reports on a research project investigating the trade-offs between on-shelf availability and profitability of a major, perishable food category in the context of substitutability and consumer loyalty. Primary research was carried out with one major UK grocery retailer and one of its category suppliers to determine what an optimal level of availability might be to ensure maximum customer service and profitability, and view the effects of this trade-off on consumer substitutability and loyalty. The findings led to the development of a general matrix to assess on-shelf availability and prioritize stock keeping units. Assuming that products with high profitability should have high availability the matrix provides three strategic propositions for underperforming products: increasi...

We review, classify, consolidate, and synthesize the contributions to the expanding field of e-business that have been published in Production and Operations Management. We classify e-business research in the following four categories: (1) e-auctions, (2) radio frequency identification, (3) e-business system design, and (4) competition, conflict, collaboration, and coordination (C^sup 4^ in e-business). We identify important research themes, research methodologies, and research techniques within each of these categories. We also provide directions for future research and discuss the managerial implications of the e-business research reported in our paper.
