Economies that rank high on the strength of investor protection index have extensive disclosure requirements and give shareholders broad access to information both before and during trials to determine director liability. New Zealand and Singapore, which top the rankings on the index with 29 and 28 of 30 possible points, both require immediate disclosure of a related-party transaction and of the conflict of interest (table 7.1). They require prior approval of the transaction by the other shareholders. They enable the shareholders to hold the directors liable and to have the transaction voided if it damages the company. And in New Zealand shareholders can inspect all internal documents before deciding whether to sue.

In the last decade, a small but distinguished group of medical and even some legal scholars have sought to address this dilemma by calling for a revision of our current methods of informed consent in favor of shared medical decision-making.9 Shared medical decision-making is a process in which the physician shares with the patient all relevant risk and benefit information on all treatment alternatives and the patient shares with the physician all relevant personal information that might make one treatment or side effect more or less tolerable than others.10 Then, both parties use this information to come to a mutual medical decision.11 Advocates of shared medical decision-making praise its improvements in patient autonomy and comprehension, its ability to reduce unwanted medical procedu...

The late William Odom, a former three-star general who served as director of the National Security Agency under President Reagan, described terrorism as a "tactic," not an "enemy" and viewed it as a serious problem but not a "strategic" one. But while the Osama bin Ladens of the world cannot destroy the United States, our reaction to 9/11, while understandable on many levels, has done great damage to the nation's social fabric. It served as a "spectacular provocation," in the words of bin Laden's longtime No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahari, and has kept us in a state of what General Odom called "sustained hysteria.

Many of the members of Congress of both parties who have gone to Syria in recent months have said they believe hes a reformer. Hillary Clinton on Bashar al-Assad, March 27
WASHINGTON Few things said by this administration in its two years can match this one for moral bankruptcy and strategic incomprehensibility. First, its demonstrably false. It was hoped that President Assad would be a reformer when he inherited his fathers dictatorship a decade ago. Being a London-educated eye doctor, he received the full Yuri Andropov treatment the assumption that having been exposed to Western ways, hed been Westernized. Wrong. Assad has run the same iron-fisted Alawite police state as did his father. Bashar made promises of reform during the short- lived Arab Spring of 2005. The promises were br...

A lawsuit filed by an unenrolled Maine voter who says the state's political parties have too much control over the redistricting process is unfounded, party officials and the governor's office say.
Mike Turcotte, an independent from Bangor, filed the suit last week against Gov. Paul LePage. It charges that the rights of individuals enrolled in political parties supersede those of unenrolled voters because 14 of the 15 members of the Reapportionment Committee are registered Republicans or Democrats. That denies his right to "equal representation" under the U.S. Constitution, Turcotte argues.
