NEWBURGH The rancor that has permeated town business at times was mostly absent Monday as five candidates for two abandoned seats on the Board of Selectmen gathered to share their views. The two vacancies were created last month with the resignations of Selectmen Leonard Buddy Belcher and Leona Smith, who cited constant criticism from some residents for their decisions. One week before those resignations, Mike Burns defeated incumbent Stanley Smith, meaning that after the election on Wednesday, Newburghs top elected board will have all new faces.

Senate There are 37 Senate seats are up for election, 19 held by Democrats and 18 by Republicans. Fourteen of these seats are open - six Democratic and eight Republican - meaning there is no incumbent competing in the election. Three of the races are open because the incumbent lost his or her primary election: Sens. Bob Bennett, R- Utah, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Arlen Specter, D-Pa. (Murkowski is running as a write-in candidate.) The current party breakdown in the Senate is 57 Democrats, 41 Republicans and two independents who caucus with the Democrats.
