When they're making beer on bright, freezing days, it isn't difficult to find the Blue Point Brewing Company in Patchogue.
Just search for the source of the powerful perfume filling the cold air, a dazzling mixture of pine and sweet flowers cut with spice. Look for the clouds of smoke from workers pouring hops into a huge, brick-faced tank alive with gallons of boiling barley malt. We need to talk. What managers of non-profits must be able to do have changed drastically. In earlier generations, the typical non-profit manager was judged by and guided in daily decisions by the kindness of one's own heart. Today, that is still a base line requirement. However, in addition, the non-profit manager must be able to comply with laws, maintain fundamental accountability for all resources entrusted to it, and recognize that non-profits are part of the engine of social order. The non-profit leader needs to be equipped and skilled to manage staff, reduce costs, manage their human resources, increase production, manage in times of financial crisis, and be very effective in fundraising and public education efforts.
