Even under the best of circumstances, the nine months of pregnancy can feel like an eternity. To really know what forever feels like, however, throw in a few months of bed rest. My obstetrician ordered bed rest for me around the midpoint of my pregnancy after I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix - a cervix too weak to maintain a pregnancy to full term. Stitches called a cerclage were put in my cervix to keep it closed, and the bed rest helped keep the pressure off my cervix as the baby grew.

Complications began early on in her pregnancy. [Nicola] was hospitalized three times due to bleeding. The doctors tried to prevent her premature birth but at 29 weeks A'ryn was born by Caesarian section. As if this was not traumatic enough Nicola suffered from a minor stroke during the delivery. Little A'ryn weighed in at a mere three pounds and was immediately swept away and attached to life support. It wasn't until a week and a half later that A'ryn's ventilator was removed and the nervous new parents got to hold her for the first time. A'ryn remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for a long five weeks. Those days in November 2003 seem distant now to the Jackson family. Parents as well as A'ryn are doing great thanks to life-saving therapies developed through March...

Heart rate: Old advice said pregnant women should keep their heart rates below 140 beats per minute. "That was never based on sound science," said Hope Ricciotti, a clinician and associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School. "Just listen to your body," Ricciotti said. "Stop if you feel dizzy or very short of breath. Intensity: Many pregnancy Web sites advise against strenuous exercise, but both Ricciotti and ACOG say there are no data clearly showing harm. Still, [Raul Artal] suggests caution, noting that strenuous exercise is no better for one's health than moderate exercise. "And so the question is, "Why would you do strenuous exercise unless you are competing?" "ACOG advises frequent OB-GYN visits for women who train hard.
