This qualitative study, based on a series of 30 in-depth interviews and 109 economic surveys conducted with active heroin users residing in and around Detroit, Michigan, describes reported patterns of heroin use and income generation activities. In spite of lack of access to regular, legal employment, we found that many participants displayed a dedication to regular daily routine and a sense of risk management or control. These findings are discussed relative to past research on heroin addiction as well as recent research on the changing nature of employment. We argue that this sample fits somewhere in between the controlled or working addict, and the "junkie" or "righteous dope fiend" of urban lore. We draw a connection between these stable patterns of addiction and income generation a...

In spring 2000, three events-two political statements by Bill Clinton and Tony Blair and a breakthrough announcement by Celera Genomics-had a major impact on biotechnology stocks. We analyze their effects over a comprehensive set of biopharmaceutical companies, using a composite return-generating model with an industry-specific patent-based factor. Our results show that stocks can be clustered according to their responsiveness to political and scientific events. Furthermore, we emphasize different impacts on the market value of intangible assets for each cluster, suggesting that growth options are valued with different criteria for therapeutics, and technology-based subsectors.

Based on theories of social exchange and cognitive decision-making, the current research was an initial attempt to analyze battered and nonbattered women's decision-making processes using a policy capturing methodology. Participants included 28 battered and 30 nonbattered women who responded to several questionnaires and vignettes about violent relationships. Overall, both groups of women reported they would be unlikely to stay in the described relationships. Further, the cue of violence intensity was overwhelmingly the most heavily weighted variable for women in both samples, and a comparison of subjective reports and objective policies found that both groups lacked insight into which variables they were weighing when deciding to stay. Results suggest that when making the intellectual ...

This study looks at factors affecting the decision of early retirement for Egyptian government sector employees. The empirical analysis is based on 2005 nationally representative sample of government sector workers. Among the findings of this study are: women are more likely to retire earlier than men; good health status is associated with longer stay on the job; the level of education is not a determining factor for women, but it is for men; men plan to work after their early retirement; the presence of the working wife has a positive effect on her husband to retire early, yet a working husband discourages his wife from retiring early. Policy implications discussed timing of the announcement of the plans; the potential outcome of excessive payouts, as well as the need for the governmen...

This study uses data from Chinese publicly listed companies for the period of September 2000-September 2008 to test the accuracy of Altman's Z-score model in predicting failure of Chinese companies. Prediction accuracy was tested for three Z-score variations: Altman's original model, a reestimated model for which the coefficients in Altman's model were recalculated, and a revised model which used different variables. All three models were found to have significant predictive ability. The reestimated model has higher prediction accuracy for predicting nonfailed firms, but Altman's model has higher prediction accuracy for predicting failed firms. The revised Z-score model has a higher prediction accuracy compared with both the reestimated model and Altman's original model. This study indi...
