Dr. King said those of us who had come to the March were there to cash our checks, because we refused to believe "the bank of justice is bankrupt" or that "there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation." He said we'd come to cash a check "that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice." Then in the next breath he said something that President [Barack Obama] made a central theme of his own campaign: Dr. King said we'd "come to this hallowed spot" in our nation's capital "to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. I certainly refuse to believe that our nation is bankrupt of justice and opportunity, and never will give up until our nation's professed commitment to justice for all results in ending poverty and hopelessn...
Jeff White, the fine Virginia beat writer at the Richmond Times- Dispatch, brought up an interesting point on this week's ACC teleconference. Virginia's visit to Maryland lands on Jan. 20 - Inauguration Day. For anyone from the commonwealth, it will be a near-disaster just to make it to Comcast Center.
The Washington-based Nubian Leadership Circle is asking Black families to stay home on Jan. 18, 19 and 20, and participate in their "Celebrating History at Home Project." These dates are the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the date for the inauguration of Pres.-elect Barack Obama. The conveners of the project are urging Black families to sit down to a family dinner on the day before the national celebration of the birth of Dr. King "to honor our elderly. The group is also urging families to serve "wholesome" meals and "no alcoholic beverages." The concept for the NLC started with a group of fellows, who attended the 1995 Million Man March," explained Kalonji Olusegun, a co-convener of the NLC and second-vice president of the Republic of New Africa. "Obama has restrengthened our...
Guess who, in large measure, bankrolled O'[Connor]'s campaign? That's right: real-estate people. Of the 31 five-figure contributions his campaign got through early May, 13 came from real estate or development interests. They'll have O'Connor's ear -- at the very least. At African-American forums, O'Connor was frequently asked about the Citizens Police Review Board, which investigates charges of police misconduct, and which he opposed before city voters mandated its creation in 1997. The questions became especially pointed after the Fraternal Order of Police, which has long battled the board, gave O'Connor its endorsement and a $10,000 campaign contribution. O'Connor said he'd work with the board, but didn't promise to order officers to cooperate with board investigations, nor to respect...
SPRINGFIELD - The capital city was bustling with pomp and pageantry Monday as Gov. Rod Blagojevich and all statewide officers were sworn into office. They celebrated by hosting a number of parties and receptions. Here is a sampling of some of the sights and sounds heard and seen on Inauguration Day:- The soundtrack of the governors march toward a second term began purposefully with a 70-piece military band playing a serious, forceful song titled "The Commando March." But the mood was quickly broken when the band broke into a spirited rendition of the "Liberty Bell March," which, by the way, served as the theme song for "Monty Pythons Flying Circus."- "Everything today has a glossy coating to it. But the hard, cold reality of our budget problems is right around the corner," said state Re...
As the country watches the historic inauguration of President- elect Barack Obama on Tuesday, several students from north county will be in Washington participating in the festivities. Twelve students from North County High School's Academy of Hospitality, Travel and Tourism will be working a food stand on Inauguration Day and a couple of students from other schools will attend the 2009 Presidential Youth Leadership Conference starting Friday. A group of six to eight students from Meade High School will present the colors at another inaugural event.
Previous presidents have usually used their own bibles for the swearing-in ceremony, however [Abraham Lincoln]'s personal Bible and his possessions had not arrived in Washington, D.C., in time for the ceremony, so William Thomas Carroll, the clerk of the Supreme Court at the time, brought the Bible specifically for Lincoln's swearing-in ceremony. Gleaves Whitney, a presidential historian at Michigan's Grand Valley State University, in the CNN article "[Barack Obama] picks Bible for inauguration, but what verse?" said that three presidents, have used II Chronicles 7:4 in their swearing-in ceremonies: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will h...
What we saw in the District the night of Nov. 4, 2008, was unprecedented. When Sen. Barack Obama was declared the next president, residents across the city poured into the streets. Cheers could be heard blocks away from spontaneous celebrations at the White House and elsewhere. Traffic along the historic U Street corridor and other places came to a halt. Joyful residents crowded busy intersections in Ward 1's Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. Students gathered to celebrate at the historic Howard University campus. People danced, sang and chanted Mr. Obama's name in the streets.
Editor, the Tribune: The Jan. 20 Tribune proves the conservative citizenry's point. Media of all types - radio, TV, newspapers, everything but independent conservative talk radio hosts - have a liberal slant. Hank Waters shot himself in the foot in his editorial by claiming the media treat both the right and left the same. I would like to see the Tribune's front page on Inauguration Day of four and eight years ago. Remember eight years ago? A son followed his dad to the White House, which had only happened once before. Sort of historical, I think, and the Supreme Court had to decide the winner so the Democrats couldn't steal the election - another sort of historical event. Barack Obama being elected president is a historical event, no doubt. Having a full front-page photo of him and Mic...
