The Federal Election Commission Thursday gave comedian Stephen Colbert permission to form a "super PAC," a political action committee that can raise unlimited funds from corporations, unions and individuals to oppose or support candidates in the 2012 elections. Colbert, who portrays a conservative television commentator on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," asked the commission for a media exemption to let him use the show's resources, such as air time and staff, without it being viewed as an in-kind contribution to the political action committee of Comedy Central's parent company, Viacom Inc.

Several weeks ago, Queens Judge Phyllis Orlikoff Flug threw out a challenge by Wills to remove Paultre Bell from the ballot, had the 899 signatures of registered voters needed to participate in the election. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and even Becky Thatcher would be at home on the proposed new playground at Dogwood Park in Germantown. The city has been awarded another $150,000 playground state grant. PlayCore, a playground manufacturer, is matching the state grant and providing $300,000 in equipment. Santa Fe mayoral candidate Asenath Kepler, who trails incumbent David Coss in fundraising, is getting a greater share of her support in noncash contributions, according to initial campaign finance statements filed this week. The largest noncash or in-kind contribution reported thus far in the mayoral campaign is valued at $4,596 from Joe Grine, a former Santa Fe County commissioner and former City Council candidate, who has provided free rent and other support for Kepler's bid in the March 2 municipal election.
