WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration announced Thursday that it was reimposing import quotas on two types of Chinese clothing and textiles, intensifying trade tensions between the two nations in advance of a White House visit next week by China's president.
The administration said that it would limit imports of fabric made with synthetic filament threads as well as bras, girdles, panty girdles and corsets in response to a surge in shipments that have battered the U.S. industry.

Politicians' infatuation with ethanol has led federal and state governments to rip off taxpayers for decades, but now consumers are suffering the ill effects of government's love for the grain-based fuel. Because of U.S. import quotas that keep out most foreign sugar and keep U.S. sugar prices high, most soft drinks and many sweet foods here are made with high-fructose corn syrup.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- To Carolina Mills chief executive Steve Dobbins, the elimination of import quotas on hundreds of textile products will only increase the pain his company has suffered for some time.
Until recently, Dobbins' firm operated 17 textile plants within a short drive of its Maiden, N.C., headquarters and employed 2,600 workers. But those plants have dwindled as customers went out of business, anticipating the expiration of the decades-old quotas on Jan. 1.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States will bring trade cases against China to determine whether quotas should be re-imposed to protect textile and clothing manufacturers against a surge in Chinese imports, the Bush administration said Monday.
The decision represents a major victory for U.S. manufacturers, who had been pressing the administration to bring these cases on its own rather than waiting for the industry to petition the government for relief, a process that could take a longer period of time.
