The article examines the role of the Parsis of India in the opium trade between China and India during the 18th and 19th centuries. It examines the significant role of a non-European group in the history of drugs. The Parsi involvement in the opium trade constituted an important component in the rise of Western capital in Asia, the development of the Indian and imperial economies, and the growth of Bombay and other colonial centers. Furthermore, the article examines the ability of drugs to serve the interests of non-Europeans under imperialism, as opium provided for the economic, social, and political development of the Parsi community. The article notes an episode in the history of both a community and a drug. The Parsis constitute one of the first and arguably most significant example...

Nahua" does not refer to any one indigenous ethnic group, but I use it to refer "to the Nahuatl-speaking peoples of Postclassic [C.E. 900-1521] highland central Mexico," including the Mexica (Aztecs) who were the dominating power at the time of the colonial encounter and contemporary peoples who trace their genealogies to these groups.3 Tonantzin forms part of the story of "transculturation," that is, of cultural loss, cultural persistence, and the creation of hybrid cultural forms mediated through power relations in sixteenth-century Mesoamerica.4 However, although the construction of Malinche as Guadalupe's "monstrous double" has been widely discussed, there have been fewer attempts to analyze the significance of Tonantzin as Guadalupe's bruja-ized (witched) Other in colonial discour...

When Evo Morales, former coca grower and leader of the coca-growers' union, was elected president of Bolivia in 2005, many observers of Bolivian politics anticipated that Bolivia would rapidly cease cooperation with the United States in the "War on Drugs." Such a change, however, has not been apparent. What explains Bolivia's continued cooperation? I argue here that US-Bolivian trade policy, which enables the US to use trade preferences as a carrot to promote Bolivian drug policy, may best explain this apparently anomalous behavior, suggesting that trade may be an effective tool in promoting non-economic foreign policy goals.

To: POLITICAL EDITORS COVER: The World After Georgia (All overseas editions). Moscow Bureau Chief Owen Matthews reports that in the aftermath of the war in Ossetia, Russia achieved its goal of gaining respect. Ever since he came to power in 2000, Vladimir Putin, now prime minister, has dreamed of reversing the decline in Russia's actual power over its own backyard. But while he talked a big game, harking back to the rhetoric of Soviet and tsarist Russian imperialism, Russia's power shrank dramatically. Matthews reports that the war in Ossetia is all about drawing a line under further NATO expansion-and sending a strong signal to Georgia, Ukraine and Europe that Russia won't be pushed around. The invasion marked the end of Russia's browbeaten, humiliated post-cold-war era and the beginni...
