SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is only now beginning the long road to recovery after years of budget cuts, layoffs and park closures.
In the latest example of Gov. Pat Quinn-style electronic democracy, IDNR Director Marc Miller is asking outdoor enthusiasts to fill out an online survey to help find cures for what ails the agency. He's hoping for input in three areas:- How can IDNR get more people involved in outdoor recreation? - How can the agency boost public access to recreational opportunities in a state where 98 percent of the land is privately owned?- Where can the financially-strapped state find more cash to enhance conservation and recreation?

Christmas came early for waterfowl managers at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
After years of lobbying, officials from IDNR and other states convinced the powers-that-be at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to allow states to have as many as four hunting zones with varying dates. The federal agency makes the decisions because they have jurisdiction over migrating birds.

A new Illinois Department of Natural Resources program designed to increase access to private land for outdoor activities and the expansion of another program to provide food for the needy deserve close looks.
IDNR has received a three-year federal grant through the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to implement the new Illinois Recreational Access Program.

With the 2011-2012 white-tail season under way, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources estimates the size of the state's deer herd at roughly the same as last season, when hunters recorded the lowest harvest since the record year 2005-2006.
Last year's all-season harvest was 182,270. That's nearly a 10- percent drop from the record tally of 201,209.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reports one person was killed in 37 snowmobile accidents during the winter 2009-2010.
That's down from seven deaths in 2007-2008 and three deaths in 2008-2009.
