President Bush signed a measure yesterday that stiffens penalties for identity theft and makes it a felony to help terrorists obtain false identification.
The Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act provides up to two years in prison for anyone stealing or distributing someone else's personal information, and up to five years for anyone committing identity theft in conjunction with a terrorist act.

WASHINGTON, July 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Chad Hatten, 36, of Houston, Texas, was sentenced today to 90 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, the Justice Department announced today.
Hatten was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lee H. Rosenthal in the Southern District of Texas to 66 months on four counts of access device fraud. He was also sentenced to 24 additional months for aggravated identity theft, which will be served consecutively to the access device fraud counts, pursuant to the Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act enacted in July 2004.

The agency eliminated a clause stating that three-quarters of those apprehended had to be criminals, allowing for non-fugitive "ordinary status violators" to be factored into their count.

WASHINGTON - Calling identity theft "one of the fastest-growing crimes in our nation," President Bush signed legislation Thursday imposing mandatory prison time for those who use fake IDs to commit terrorist-related crimes.
The Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act adds two years to prison sentences for criminals convicted of using stolen personal data to commit crimes. Felons who use the identity information to commit "terrorist offenses" would get an extra five years.
