WASHINGTON, March 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The House Financial Services Committee voted today to repeal strict state notification and credit freeze laws that have helped to protect consumers from identity theft and financial fraud. These laws provide essential protections that allow consumers to prevent identity thieves from opening credit accounts in their names and require companies to inform consumers when their personal data -- such as their Social Security and credit card numbers -- have become compromised.

A survey of AARP members in West Virginia shows that a majority of them want laws requiring companies to notify clients of security breaches on their personal information.
Under existing law, businesses do not have to contact clients if they lose or compromise any of their personal data.

Multiple states enacted laws Sunday designed to help prevent identity theft after major security breaches compromised personal data for millions of consumers in 2005, including last week's incident at Marriott Vacation Club International.

Paterson hopes to strengthen ID theft laws
Gov. David A. Paterson announced Wednesday that he has introduced legislation that would strengthen New York State's identity theft laws by protecting individuals from the misuse o their personal information, according to a release from the state. In recent years, identity theft has prompted frequent legislative action, but significant gaps remain in New York State's identity theft laws.
