  • The middle" (thump) "class" (thump) "is getting" (thump) "hosed up here." Thump. "We're on our fourth generation," [Wendy Jaquet] says proudly. "This is a Washington State model: identify young people as interns and train them to run campaigns. The Republicans are always saying, 'Wendy, you're doing this right, bringing these people along.' I was just copying what I thought they did. "I've got the 'crazy Idahoans, they're hopeless,' stigma," [Jerry Brady] acknowledges. "I've got to get over that."

  • WHEN HE'S IN HIS Washington, D.C., office, Rep. C.L. "Butch" Otter (R-Idaho) wears a pin-striped suit, a solid tie, and a white shirt with his nicknam...

  • Back in March, in the waning days of the Idaho Legislature, lawmakers and political activists came together with a new proposal to partially close Idaho's primary system. The bill would have ended the free-for-all voting model now used by both Republicans and Democrats, in which anyone, regardless of party preference, can vote in either primary. In the new measure, Idaho's major parties would prohibit the other side from voting in each other's primaries, and independent voters could choose. But they'd have to declare which primary they were voting in. Now Idaho is firmly in the "issues" stage of the game. Last weekend, the Idaho Republican Party's Central Committee voted 88 to 58 to close their party's primaries. The surprising vote sets in motion a series of events that could forever c...

  • Sen. Larry E. Craig was free-falling in Idaho opinion polls and getting excoriated on talk-radio shows as the state's largest paper yesterday called for his resignation over a sex scandal. He's in trouble," said an Idaho Republican Party official. "There is zero interest in his running for re-election and [Mr. Craig's previous supporters] want this over with now.

  • Some are very experienced, very savvy and very connected," said Minority Caucus Chair Sen. Kate Kelly. "It's a good thing in this day and age, when money talks so much. You have to be able to get those financial resources. "I don't think the term 'anointed' is the appropriate term," said Jason Risch, son of the lieutenant governor. "My father was endorsed by the Idaho Republican Party based on his long-standing record and support on Republican issues, and it's an endorsement my father is honored to have." "More people in the state have moved to the independent category, so they're considering Democratic candidates-that's the difference," [Wendy Jaquet] said. "They're beginning to see the alternatives."

  • BOISE, Idaho - The list of Idaho Republicans condemning a GOP gubernatorial candidate's comments about buying a license to hunt President Barack Obama grew Friday, as party leaders worried the incident would reflect badly on the state. S. Sen. Mike Crapo said former elk rancher Rex Rammell's comment at a Twin Falls GOP event merits an apology, U.S. Sen. Jim Risch disavowed him from the Republican Party and Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter called Rammell's comment "reckless and inflammatory.

  • Craig, Idaho's Republican senior senator, has been dealing with problems on the home office front. Apparently it's nearly impossible to keep staff on hand when they're working for a guy who has announced he's done with politics. Especially a guy who is several months behind everyone else in the world on that conclusion. [Larry Craig]'s staff began leaving this fall, and the exodus has continued through the winter. Recently, Craig's stalwart home office spokesman Sid Smith jumped ship and now works for the Idaho Republican Party, a group with decidedly more stable future prospects in Red State Idaho. Smith had bravely fought back the press hordes in Boise and beyond, but now walks the streets of Boise with no less a busy schedule but, we'd surmise, a lighter heart. Now, with the cherry t...

  • We're looking at 2010," said Idaho Republican Party executive director Sid Smith. "That's a very real concern," Smith said. "Even in a strongly Republican state like Idaho, you always have to appeal to the independent voters. Those are critical to any election. We wouldn't be successful without attracting independent voters," he said. "It's as pitched a dispute between moderates and conservatives as we've seen in a long time," he said.

  • The Tans and other factory owners, realizing that relations with American government were important, hired a lobbyist--none other than the now-infamous Jack Abramoff. Abramoff, recently convicted of bribery, tax evasion and fraud, became "friends" with [Willie Tan] and took Congressional members and their families on boondoggles to the beaches and warm vacation playgrounds on the island. Former Republican leader Tom DeLay was one of them. And what did Tan get in return? DeLay blocked legislation that would change Saipan's status and hold employers to U.S. labor laws, for one. And access to members of Congress was presumably another, since Tan contributed large sums to Republican causes and organizations, including the Idaho Republican Party.
