The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hurricane Protection Office has completed the first phase of selecting a contractor for the design- build construction on a more than $500-million Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Hurricane Protection Project in New Orleans.
Contractors who are moving to the second phase of the selection process include: Kiewit Federal Group Inc. of Arlington, Va.; New Orleans-based Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure Inc.; the Boise, Idaho-based joint venture Washington Group International Inc./ Interbeton, Inc.; and Tetra Tech EC Inc. of Morris Plains, N.J.

The new overpasses were designed by Connecting Idaho Partners, a consortium of Boise-based Washington Group International Inc. and Denver-based CH2M Hill Inc. Forsgren Associates Inc., of Boise, did the final design.

BOISE, Idaho - San Francisco-based URS Corp. is buying Washington Group International for $2.6 billion, the engineering and construction companies announced Monday.
The boards of directors of both companies unanimously approved the deal, which calls for Washington Group stockholders to receive $43.80 in cash and .772 shares of URS stock for each Washington Group share.

A Westmoreland subsidiary signed a new agreement to supply coal from its Jewett Mine in Texas to an adjacent power plant owned by NRG Energy Inc. Coal sales from the plant make up 29 percent of Westmoreland's coal sales and more than one-fourth of its annual revenue.

MORGANTOWN - Consultants are trying to determine what sickened four men as they worked on a scrubber project at Allegheny Energy's Fort Martin power plant.

Port of Vancouver is once again in the copper business as China's insatiable appetite for raw materials has driven up the worldwide price of copper and other metals.
Quadra Mining Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C., is shipping copper concentrate from Nevada through the Port of Vancouver to China. The first load of 10,000 metric tons of the mined material is scheduled to be loaded onto a ship Monday. Quadra has also contracted to move 60,000 metric tons to Japan next year, according to Alastair Smith, the port's senior director of marketing and operations.
