The 'Alawis of Syria are part of the Shi'a stream; this has led to an alliance with Iran, the center of Shi'ite Islam. This alliance aggravated the oppositionist Syrian Muslim Brotherhood (MB), whose members have been in exile since 1982. According to them, the alliance is a stage in a Shi'ite scheme to take over the Sunni countries, including Syria. However, during the past year the MB has changed their strategy, and we are currently witnessing a rapprochement between the Brotherhood and Damascus.

NEW YORK -- Spurred by a broad coalition of religious, labor and immigrant groups, the City Council overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Tuesday to add two of the most important Muslim holy days to the public schools' holiday calendar.
But the vote, which was nonbinding, put the council in conflict with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has the final say to designate the days off and has said he is resolutely opposed to the idea.

At a time that relations between Jews and Arabs in this country are at an all-time low, [Daniel Gavron] has published a book, Holy Land Mosaic: Stories of Cooperation and Coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2007, $24.95 pb), offering dozens of examples of successful cooperation between the two peoples.

A longtime Topeka gospel musician and associate pastor is starting a new church.
The Rev. T.J. Parker, whose group the Harmony Kings has performed locally and across the nation for several decades, will be pastor of the Greater Deliverance Missionary Baptist Church, which will meet in the Whitson Elementary School Auditorium, 1725 S.W. Arnold. The first service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday.
