The most general challenge face by technical analysts is neither optimization nor overfitting, but how best to use domain knowledge to infer an appropriate bias in their algorithms. At the risk of oversimplifying, statistics generally concerns testing a given hypothesis, while machine learning concerns formulating the process of generalization as a search through possible hypotheses in an attempt to find the best hypothesis. Classical statistics involves calculation the probability of the data if the null hypothesis is true, while Bayesian inference involves calculating the probability of a hypothesis, given the data. The trading community typically worries about avoiding over-fitting and statistical significance, but the author's practical successes have been due to the appropriate app...

The primary subject matter of this case is the integration of statistics, macroeconomics, and business ethics. Secondary issues include descriptive statistics (interpretation of standard deviation), normal distribution, and statistical hypothesis testing. The case has a difficulty level of three, appropriate for junior level. The case is designed to be taught in three class hours, including a formal case presentation by a team and a challenge by another student team. Three hours of outside preparation by students are required.

Statistical analysis in Six Sigma's define, measure, analyze, improve and control strategy often involves the use of an analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple regression. The statistical analysis of performance involves simple, descriptive statistics followed by exploratory techniques and development of hypothesis testing. An ANOVA is normally used when group differences are measured and an analysis is required. Multiple regressions are often used to determine the relation between a group of variables and what combination of variables could explain the variance in the criterion variable being studied. The data from the study in this article comes from a public database on transit system use and attitudinal surveys. A canonical correlation revealed that the combination of transportati...

Although not typical organizational crises, chronic stressors like workplace bullying have the capacity to shatter assumptions and create significant disruption. This paper reviews literature linking organizational climate, workplace bullying, and posttraumatic stress symptoms, and presents a research case study that explores hypotheses raised by the review. Results showed: (1) that workplace bullying impacted upon posttraumatic stress symptoms; and that psychosocial organizational climate was (2) related to the occurrence of workplace bullying and (3) moderated the impact of bullying on posttraumatic stress symptoms. Given the contribution of organizational climate to the development of bullying and its effects, the paper concludes with guidelines to develop climates conducive to emplo...

This study investigated the empirical relationships among managerial linear and nonlinear thinking styles and the four branches of Mayer and Salovey's (1997) emotional intelligence model. Also tested was the moderating effect of emotional labor on the relationship between balanced linear/nonlinear thinking style and affective organizational commitment. Data from 93 managers demonstrated that: (1) linear thinking is associated with regulating emotions; (2) nonlinear thinking is related to utilizing emotions to facilitate thinking; and (3) balanced linear/nonlinear thinking is associated with overall emotional intelligence. Furthermore, emotional labor interacted with balanced linear/nonlinear thinking to explain unique variance in affective organizational commitment. Implications for the...

The levels of financial literacy among students of the three countries, specifically, the U.S., Belarus, and Japan were analyzed to identify similarities and differences in the student performance on a standardized test. The authors generally find that, on the average, Belarusian university students performed better than high school students and Belarusian high school students demonstrated a similar level of achievement with American high school students who did not receive personal finance instruction. Japanese students outperformed both Belarusian and American students with and without personal finance training. There was consistently higher performance on the topic of Earning Income and lower performance on the topic Savings across the three nations.
