While several studies have examined the relationship between hegemonic masculinity and criminality, prior research has not explored correctional interventions that respond to the pernicious effects of hypermasculinity in prison. This article reports the findings of an exploratory, qualitative study of two related men's programs at prisons in Massachusetts and California. The study included participant observation and interviews with program volunteers. The article describes how the programs seek to deconstruct hypermasculinity in the prison setting and help inmates redefine masculinity to produce prosocial outcomes. The programs are offshoots of a large, voluntary organization called the ManKind Project. Drawing on the philosophy of the "mythopoetic men's movement" as well as popular pe...

Online groups and activist communities cannot rely on spatial boundaries to delineate the social boundaries of belonging. Within online communities, virtual identities demarcate the social borders of groups. Skinhead Forum, a skinhead blog, is analyzed to illustrate how the group is bounded by the virtual identities of its participants. The particular focus of analysis is hypermasculinity and heteronormativity as two of the most important attributes for virtual skinheads to embody. Virtual collective identities are continually being negotiated, and online participants can never be sure that others' virtual identities are authentic. Thus virtual boundaries based on the virtual identities of group participants must be rigorously maintained. This is accomplished through discussion of the e...

The purpose of the current study was to gather data on the attitudes and smoking habits of university students. Data were collected from 250 undergraduates dealing with various aspects of smoking behavior. There were 80 smokers and 170 nonsmokers, including 21 former smokers. In addition to demographic information, participants were assessed with respect to chronic self-destructiveness, locus of control, and hypergender ideology. Findings indicated significant positive relationships among willingness to date, marry, live with, and have sex with a smoker. Hypermasculinity was positively related to chronic self-destructiveness. Hyperfemininity was not related to chronic self-destructiveness. Nicotine dependence was also positively related to chronic self-destructiveness, but unrelated to ...

This research study assessed the factors that affect Latino men's endorsement of hypermasculinity, an exaggerated form of traditional masculinity ideology. One hundred and one Latino men from two urban universities and surrounding neighborhoods completed measures that assessed ethnic identity, hypermasculinity, sex-role egalitarianism perceived in the home, and reference group identity dependence. It was hypothesized that hypermasculinity would be linked to traditional sex-roles taught in the home, male identity, and ethnic identity. The results indicate that hypermasculinity was associated with high ethnic identity and a male identity characterized by a lack of appreciation of differences among males.

Von Hallberg profiles Frank Sinatra, an American jazz singer and actor, who wrote lyrics to only two songs of his life, presented popular poetry to large numbers of listeners and television viewers, and became identified with a distinctive repertoire of songs. Sinatra performed a vaguely feminine sort of persona on stage, and in lyrics, but achieved success as an icon of hypermasculinity. Sinatra went further than most other singers in presenting for consumption a comprehensive image of his music.
