Elegance beyond mere ornament
One of the images in the new book Design Meets Disability, from MIT Press, shows a model wearing a tiered wooden skirt. It looks like one of those wacky outfits that cause most of us to shake our heads in bewilderment, but there's more to this one. Fashion designer Hussein Chalayan created it as part of a series involving objects that could be transformed into clothing during wartime evacuations.

Featuring approximately eighty contemporary garments by leading designers, "Love and War: The Weaponized Woman" will be divided into four sections: (1) "The Weaponized Woman" will feature warrior-like fashions designed by Boudicca, [Jean Paul Gaultier], Helmut Lang, Gianni Versace, and Yohji Yamamoto, as well as an example of theatrical armor worn by an actress playing Joan of Arc. (2) "The Hard Body" will pair an armored breastplate from the Renaissance with high fashion equivalents such as [Issey Miyake]'s red fiberglass bodice. It's shaped like a naked female torso. Hussein Chalayan's fiberglass dress and Theirry Mugler's extraordinary metal fashions will also be in this section. (3) "Officers, Not Gentlemen" will show how military uniforms are used in contemporary fashion.

Paris has been the center of fashion for hundreds of years. An exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, seeks to explore Paris' fashion hold and the fashions themselves. "Fashion Show: Paris Collections 2006" opens today. It features designs from 10 of the world's top fashion houses.
The installations show off about 10 pieces from each fashion house from the spring couture or fall ready-to-wear collections designed by Azzedine Alaa, Hussein Chalayan, Chanel, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Maison Martin Margiela, Rochas, Valentino, Viktor & Rolf and Yohji Yamamoto.

LOS ANGELES - After a string of more sartorially subdued award shows, the Grammys are usually a welcome relief, with plenty of flash and sometimes shocking outfit choices. But this year, the artists who walked the red carpet left the sequin pasties and overly themed outfits at home, favoring relatively tame metallic gowns, dresses with angular cut-outs and animal prints.
Nicky Minaj, wearing the most over-the-top get-up on the carpet, was clad head-to-toe in a leopard print. (And, yes, it was literally head to toe, as the platinum hair close to her head was painted with leopard spots and a cotton candy-esque tower of more blond hair spouted up like the Bride of Frankenstein's signature do.) The look was created for her by Givenchy, right down to the leopard-print leggings and booties.

Artist Vincent Tiley gives credit where credit is due.
It was actually my dad's idea to open the gallery. We were driving around downtown and he said, 'There are so many available spaces. You should open a gallery,'" explained Tiley, a 2006 George Washington High School graduate and 2010 graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, one of the top art schools in the country.
