J. Abrams' new series features gorgeous husband-and-wife CIA agents (Boris Kodjoe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who banter and bicker while fighting smug European sadists. We've seen comic spy stories before, and Abrams doesn't do anything new with the genre. The car chases and computer-aided break-ins all come on cue. and you can bet there's a gruff supervisor and a wise-ass sidekick on hand.
Prohibition has begun, and gangsters fight to control everything from the mom-and-pop stores to the senators. Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) rules over Atlantic City's illegal alcohol trade, doing business with gangsters like Al Capone (Stephen Graham) and Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza). The huge cast of characters also includes showgirls, Ku Klux Klan members, prostitutes, beleaguered immigrants, a suffrag...

As a little girl, Mary Hunt Kahlenberg played in her family's attic, which was stuffed with three generations of furniture, clothes, and other treasures. Among these heirlooms was a box of silk ribbons from the days when ladies wore them to adorn their hats and clothes. In her new book, Five Centuries of Indonesian Textiles, co-edited with Ruth Barnes and published by Delmonico Books/ Prestel, Kahlenberg describes the ribbons as "snippets of silksome striped in amazing colors, others with flowers in lush velvet, as well as lengths of heavy silk grosgrain." "I became very enamored of those ribbons and all of the old clothes that hung around in the attic," Kahlenberg recalled in a recent conversation with Pasatiempo. "I give credit to those materials for my interest in textiles, which sta...

When the Nazis hauled off [Anne Frank] to the death camps on Aug. 4, 1944, she had composed but one diary. The first part of what happened to the diary is widely known. Anne's father [Otto Frank] survived the camps, found the diary and published it in 1947, whereupon it became and has remained a huge international best-seller. The husband-and-wife team of Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett adapted the diary into a Pulitzer Prize-winning stage drama (1955), the basis of a widely admired film by director George Stevens (1959). Goodrich and Hackett's play was revamped for television twice (1967 and 1980) and was long a staple in high school and community theaters, a special favorite for many years at Todd Ellis' Syracuse Civic Theatre.

As [Walt Balaban]'s frustrations fester, little things cause him to erupt in anger. When neither cantaloupes nor nectarines are available for his lunch, he complains on the phone to his brother: "The fruit plate is a serious problem!" Nothing mollifies Walt: constant adoration from autographseeking fans; soothing reassurances from a patient network executive; even the unflagging support of his loving wife, Susan. She pleads with him to "settle with being just a small superstar." Thinking "small" enrages Walt. He wants, well, more.
Prerecorded game-show segments run on an overhead screen, and get some of the evening's biggest laughs. The '70s pop tunes heard during longer scene breaks tip the authence off to the play's time setting. Susan's sweater dresses are a subtler clue, along with ...

While elite intellectuals have celebrated rap, punk, drag, porn, comic books, horror movies, and other lowbrow genres as subversive, complex, and legitimately fascinating sites of pleasure and cultural significance, genres traditionally coded as feminine and unironically enjoyed by many middle- and working-class women-romance novels, soap operas, fashion magazines, and self-help books-continue to be stigmatized as cheap, commercialized, and even reactionary, and feminized discourses that take their audience's aspirations to culture and self-improvement seriously-most notably Oprah's book club-are attacked with astonishing vehemence. While feminist scholarship has made significant strides in critiquing masculinist hierarchies and reclaiming some legacies of a sentimental feminine cultur...
