  • SAN MARINO - About $1.5 million has been awarded to 158 scholars in the humanities to conduct long- and short-term research at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens for the 2011-12 academic year, library officials announced Thursday. The Huntington, which is one of the largest granting institutions for research in the humanities, supports scholars conducting work in the fields of history, literature, art, and the history of science. Awards are granted for periods of one month up to one year, including 20 fellowships for scholars who will spend the full year in residence.

  • SAN MARINO - The slate of special exhibitions in 2012 announced Thursday by The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens will include two major shows: "Visions of Empire: The Quest for a Railroad Across America, 1840-1880" in the spring, followed by fall exhibitions anchored by "A Strange and Fearful Interest: Death, Mourning, and Memory in the American Civil War. Visions of Empire" will draw from what Huntington officials called the unparalleled resources of unpublished primary source material to tell the epic tale of national development and changes wrought by the development of the "iron horse."

  • SAN MARINO - Five new items, including an important 17th-century work attacking Galileo's famous - and then-controversial - contention that the earth revolved around the sun, have been acquired by The Library Collectors' Council at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, library officials announced Wednesday. The acquisition, they said in a statement, adds further strength to The Huntington as a center for the study of the history of science; the announcement follows the 14th annual meeting of the Collectors' Council last month.

  • SAN MARINO - George Abdo, vice president for advancement at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, has announced he will retire Aug. 31. Abdo, a staffer since 2002, is credited with leading the most successful and ambitious fundraising effort in the institution's history, reaching $244 million. He completely transformed how fundraising is done at The Huntington," Steven S. Koblik, Huntington president said in a statement Wednesday.Abdo worked with Koblik and colleagues to launch "For Generations to Come - The Campaign for The Huntington, a $175 million fundraising effort that ended in June 2010.

  • SAN MARINO - A $100 million gift from the estate of Huntington Library doyenne Frances Lasker Brody - the largest cash gift in the institution's history - was announced Tuesday by President Steven S. Koblick. It feels "a lot like winning the lottery," Koblick said of the bequest, which could yield more than the announced amount.

  • SAN MARINO - Laurie Sowd, a long-time senior staffer at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, has been named vice president for operations. Sowd has been directing operations for 19 years, and her promotion reflects her "significant and growing portfolio of responsibilities," Huntington President Steven S. Koblik said in a statement Wednesday.

  • Syrian women must cope in a competitive job market, she noted, while the system turns out a rising number of women university graduates. According to Syria's Central Bureau of Statistics, in 2007 women were the primary breadwinners in 11 percent of households.

  • SAN MARINO - As the nation begins to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War - which started on April 12, 1861 when Union- occupied Fort Sumter was fired upon by Confederate forces - the Huntington Library announced Monday its plans for a major exhibition of photographs and manuscripts opening in October 2012. The Huntington announced it will hold a scholarly conference on "Civil War Lives," featuring some of the most prominent Civil War scholars in the country, this fall, on Oct. 21 and 22.

  • The La Habra Art Association is offering a field trip to the Huntington Library from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 19. Members and friends are invited to travel to the garden estate.

  • PASADENA - To Henry Huntington, the mansion he built, stuffed with priceless art and surrounded with manicured botanical gardens was always "the ranch," the working estate he bought in 1903. Now, in a nod to its agricultural roots, the Huntington Library is bringing the ranch back.
