Andrew Carriero is lucky to be alive. Monday afternoon, the 18-year-old criminal justice student from Gowanda was pulled from Cattaraugus Creek in Zoar Valley by an Erie County sheriff's deputy. Later as the creek began to rise, he was plucked from the bottom of the 300-foot gorge in a basket in a dramatic, middle-of-the-night rescue by state police.
