DEVILS HOLE MOUNTAIN, W.Va. - When John Lash, a new acquaintance in my hunting grounds in West Virginia, invited me on a grouse hunt a couple months ago ago, it awakened long-dormant stirrings of nostalgia. It rekindled memories of trying to keep up with my father and his friends and their dogs as they hunted ruffed grouse in the thick regenerating forests of eastern Ohio's strip mine country.

The first time I joined the Ski Bums of New Jersey, I had to trudge through 4 inches of slushy ice to get to my car to drive to the bus stop to catch a bus to Hunter Mountain in New York. I was hoping the wintry mix would be powder up North, but, alas, it was raining there, too. I skied for a couple of hours in the rain, had lunch, and hoped for a rain check. But a group of the Ski Bums got back out there and I couldn't pass it up.
