PETERSBURG - A jury deadlocked yesterday on a verdict against a man accused of shooting his cousin to death over his family's eviction. A jury deadlocked 6-6 in the trial against alleged sex offenders Deborah Steinfeld and Dennis Hefner. After three days, the court declared a mistrial and a hung jury. Steinfeld's daughter, S.S. (a minor) has accused her stepfather, Hefner, of sexually molesting her for six years from the time she was 5 years old until she was 11. According to the victim, the alleged abuse took place three to four times per week.
I was watching that movie City of God," he says, "and I had to check myself. There were these kids running around with machine guns. I looked at that and thought, `Man, that's rough,' but it's normal to them. They're not even stressed. To them that's just how life is. If they came to South Philadelphia they'd say, `What are you complaining about? This is sweet!' Because that's how it is: What you grow up with, that seems normal to you. But it's not normal. It is just what you're used to. Sam Derry, Brown's fiance, held Sigel's three-month-old daughter Jaelynn proudly and cooed, "Don't you ever let me catch you looking at some other man. If I catch you cheatin' on me, you're gonna pack your bags and get out. You don't act like this with anyone else--do you?" [Sigel]'s 300-pound bodygua...
Defense attorneys are hopeful a "solid hang" - as in hung jury - in the penalty phase of Manling Williams' murder trial will win their client life in prison without parole rather than the death penalty. But a precedent on what the prosecution may be planning next is hard to find after a jury of six men and six women last week deadlocked: Eight favored giving Williams the death penalty while four favored life in prison.
HOUSTON -- The nation's first federal Vioxx trial ended Monday with a hung jury, but the case involving the 2001 death of a Florida man who took the once-popular painkiller for a month will be retried, a judge said. The mistrial leaves Vioxx's maker Merck & Co. with the prospect of facing a new jury that could hear allegations that the company withheld information from the New England Journal of Medicine about a 2000 Vioxx study so the drug would appear safer than it was. Merck shares fell more than 2 percent as the trial's outcome shook investors worried about the company's liability in the thousands of pending Vioxx cases.

After weeks of trial and deliberations, a Passaic County jury announced Wednesday it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict in the case of a Parsippany man charged with the 2007 attempted murder of a taxi driver in Clifton. Superior Court Judge Joseph A Portelli in Paterson had instructed the jury to keep trying to reach a conclusion after it informed him it was deadlocked earlier this week. He discharged the panel Wednesday upon learning that they could still not reach a decision. Opening statements in the case commenced on Dec. 9. The panel took a break between Christmas and New Year's before resuming deliberations Monday.
PARIS -- A Rumford man accused of sexual assault was found not guilty on 10 of 11 counts in Oxford County Superior Court. The jury was unable to reach a decision on the last charge against James V. Cole after nearly nine hours of deliberation and Justice Robert Clifford declared a mistrial on 11th charge.
Jurors in the federal public corruption trial of former Allegheny County Coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht announced Thursday they are "hopelessly deadlocked" on all counts but agreed to return Monday in a final attempt to reach a verdict.
