MARTIN LUTHER King Jr. changed America through a peaceful struggle against oppression. As righteous and audacious as his goal was and remains, the Rev. King's methods also hold special meaning today.
The civil rights movement was a revolution born in nonviolence, in simple civil disobedience, in the ability of human beings to persuade each other to recognize that we are one in our humanity. The movement's principles were reflections of Mahatma Gandhi's pursuit of independence for India, but King gave them new life in an American struggle that had often been obstructed by brutality and hatred.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. claims Jim Crow is re- turning. In a recent speech, Mr. Holder said that attempts by states to pass voter identification laws will disenfranchise minorities, rolling back the clock to the evil days of segregation. He said that a growing number of minorities fear that "the same disparities, divisions and problems" now afflict America as they did in 1965 prior to the Voting Rights Act. According to the Obama administration, our democracy is being threatened by racist Republicans. Hence, the Justice Department must prevent laws requiring a photo ID to vote from being enacted.

Across America and other Western democracies, gays slowly are gaining equal human rights. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down all remaining state laws against gay sex in 2003. Since then, state after state has expanded "hate crimes" laws to prevent attacks on homosexuals - and expanded civil rights laws to save them from being fired from jobs, evicted from apartments, denied service in restaurants, etc. Eight states have approved same-sex marriage or legal unions. Democrats in other states are pushing this reform.
It's a major cultural transition, like the historic civil rights movement that won equality for blacks. We hope it's unstoppable. The only organized opposition comes from the "fundamentalist right" attached to the Republican Party.
