I recently got a call from a job-seeker who was frustrated and desperate. Perhaps you will see some parallels with your situation, if you are unemployed. Andy" was referred to me by a local recruiter and was seeking guidance on finding a new job. Andy has a bachelor's degree from a local college, and he has worked in an assortment of entry-level human resources and inside sales jobs.
RIVERSIDE -- BAE Systems, the British defense contractor that bought Riverside-based MTC Technologies Inc. for $450 million in 2008, is eliminating 17 jobs at the 4032 Linden Ave. office that had served as headquarters of MTC. BAE remains committed to the region, however, with more than 200 employees in the Dayton area to serve Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and other customers, company spokesman Neil Franz said Wednesday, Jan. 6.
The proposed pay raises will go mostly to employees in the state Department of Health and Human Resources for jobs such as child support specialists, office directors, nursing directors and social workers.
CINCINNATI -- Paycor Inc., a software applications company that provides payroll and human resources data services to companies, said it is hiring at least 60 people to keep up with the growth in its business. Career options in our region are expanding mightily due to Marcellus shale development. That's the good news. The bad news is that most of the jobs open are not ones for which most people in this region are qualified. A sampling of posted jobs includes, for example, curious titles such as environmental hydrogeologist, swamper, landman, and roustabout. I don't know what a roustabout does, but it sounds like a fun job. Swamper, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about. More good news. There are openings for clerical and administrative positions, finance and information technology jobs, and legal and human-resources positions. Further, non-shale employers who provide products and services such as steel and trucking to shale companies need employees as well.

Choose your metaphor: a light at the end of the tunnel, any port in a storm, or the silver lining in 4-year-old cloud. With Southwest Washington employers looking for 1,000 new workers, were too elated to bicker over the most applicable figure of speech. WorkSource a statewide program that connects hiring companies with job seekers typically has worked to fill about 400 jobs at a time in Southwest Washington. In recent weeks, though, that number has rocketed to about 1,000, thanks to another 545 openings added by 21 expanding companies in the area. According to a Tuesday Columbian story, about 300 of the new jobs are available in Clark County; the rest are in Cowlitz County. The employers are not identified, but the jobs include engineers, production workers, supervisors, human resour...
