According to University of Memphis professor David Allen, in corporate culture the philosophical divide that exists between human resource departments and financial affairs divisions is about as wide as it gets.
On the one hand, HR folks believe their activities are typically the first to get cut whenever budgets are tightened. And on the other, finance people don't think HR departments really understand how those budgets work and why they're important.

Turn to any page in the Wall Street Journal or flip to your local news station, and you will read or hear about organizations trying to cut back in today's bleak economy, and for many human resource departments that means traditional cost cutting practices, such as hiring freezes or cuts on training programs and fringe benefits. But, cost cutting doesn't have to mean cutting back. Employing people with disabilities may be an excellent source of productive talent for your company. This group of individuals can help your business decrease turnover and increase the bottom line. There are 19.8 million working-age Americans with disabilities, and this number continues to grow as more soldiers with disabilities return home from the Middle East. The U.S. Census Bureau reported in 2003 that app...

Someone told me in a recent email exchange that he was too smart and too entrepreneurial for stupid human resource departments and employers to perceive his talents.
He may well be brilliant and previously successful. And he may be justifiably angry that he hasn't penetrated corporate hiring systems to land a job.

A good solid liberal arts education may be a ticket to Wall Street West, because corporate human resource departments will train in financial specifics if a candidate can write, reason and think. Dr. Robert G. Garraty, Ph.D., executive director of the Pennsylvania Workforce Investment Board (WIB) in Harrisburg, says that current educational statistics indicate NEPA is doing very well with workforce development. A $15 million Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) grant is now flowing from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop an educated workforce for the financial services industry in NEPA.

Human Resource departments can maximize the value of an employee survey by designing survey instruments that align with business goals and paying careful attention to follow-up action plans. The experience of Arbitron, an international media and marketing information firm, demonstrates the measurable business impact of effectively managed employee surveys. Arbitron's company-wide surveys and the resultant action planning processes have traditionally focused on the company's total population of employees, rather than on part-time call center employees per se. In developing its follow-up process, Arbitron adopted the "7-Step Model" developed by Gantz Wiley Research. This action planning model has been successfully implemented in thousands of business units internationally. Despite unique ...

Manpower Professional says the talents in shortest supply here currently occupy three professional areas: *Information technology (Java developers, Java programmers, Flash developers and project managers) *Finance (financial analysts and tax and audit accountants) *Engineering (mechanical designers, software and hardware engineers and engineering technicians) Add to these scarcities the increasing exodus of Baby Boomers across all vocations - futurists predict they'll retire in droves at the end of this decade, taking their seasoned knowledge bases with them - and it's clear the situation requires the immediate attention of employers and their human resource departments. While Baby Boomers were motivated by job satisfaction and paychecks, members of Gen X and Gen Y are motivated by ben...

Formidable knowledge management programs can offer advantages in speed, consistency and strength that directly impact the bottom line. Knowledge management could rank as one of the largest issues facing human resource departments today. Whether a company is growing or retrenching, knowledge management can prove useful. Knowledge sharing among project team members generates benefits not just when team members roll off a project or exit the company, but also in the case of unexpected emergencies. SAP, Boeing, KPMG and BearingPoint are all companies using advanced knowledge management programs to make their operations more efficient, says Art Drake, director of project management office operations, Group Health Inc., New York, N.Y. in Europe, knowledge management may be more difficult than...

Human resource departments are rapidly embracing technology systems to deliver services more efficiently and to improve the management of other programs, according to a study of major corporations in several industries.
Sixty-one percent of human resource managers reported a reduction in workload - some as high as 50 percent - as a result of employee self-service systems, which free them to focus on more strategic initiatives. The systems allow employees to sign up for benefits, change their benefit plans or write evaluations via a computer.
