  • Anger toward the political status quo is justifiable and not shallow, according to two national pundits on opposite ends of the political spectrum. Republican strategist Mary Matalin and Arianna Huffington, co- founder of the progressive Huffington Post Web site, squared off Thursday in Alumni Arena on the University at Buffalo North Campus for the opening of the 24th annual Distinguished Speakers Series.

  • Greg Mitchell, in a blog on the Huffington Post Web site, castigates the liberal news media for omitting any mention of itself or race in stories about George Sodini's online screed that culminated in the shooting rampage that killed three women at the LA Fitness center in Collier. Mitchell, editor of Editor & Publisher magazine and author of the book "Why Obama Won," noted that Sodini made comments about the "liberal media" and the "Obama economy." Sodini opened with remarks about last fall's election, the election of "The Black Man" and jokes about black men bedding white women.

  • In 2005, Arianna Huffington answered liberals' prayers when she introduced her Web site, the Huffington Post (huffingtonpost.com). The so-called "queen of the blogosphere" put a large spotlight on an unpopular war, the Republican indictments, Mark Foley's text messages, Dick Cheney's poor aim, the Hurricane Katrina blame game, Plamegate, and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' demise.

  • It's grandly being billed as a "brand-new media universe. The monumental $315 million merger of the Web-based Huffington Post and Internet pioneer AOL announced Monday could prove either a canny business alliance or expensive folly. Arianna Huffington's media hybrid - famed for its cheeky mix of breaking news, celebrity gossip and liberal opinion - could be defanged by its more bipartisan benefactor, risking the loss of its core appeal.

  • YOU can't tell everything about a movement from the signs its supporter carry, but words do count for something. That's why the liberal-leaning Huffington Post Web site posted some of the photos that its viewers took at the April 15 anti-tax "Tax Day Tea Party" protests around the country and posted them in a special feature called, "10 Most Offensive Tea Party Signs.

  • Divorce has a Web site... For a contemporary news destination like the Huffington Post, divorce is as much a part of daily life as sports and entertainment.

  • Cable news channels and bloggers are buzzing about The New Yorker magazine cover featuring Barack Obama dressed in Muslim garb and Michelle Obama with an Afro and machine gun, doing a "terrorist fist bump" in the Oval Office while an American flag burns in the fireplace. The cartoon by Barry Blitt drew immediate condemnation from the Obama and McCain camps. In an interview on the Huffington Post Web site, New Yorker Editor David Remnick argues: "Obviously I wouldn't have run a cover just to get attention - I ran the cover because I thought it had something to say. What I think it does is hold up a mirror to the prejudice and dark imaginings about both Obamas. It combines a number of images that have been propagated, not by everyone on the right but by some, about Obama's supposed `lack ...

  • DURING my childhood in 1930s Boston, anti-Semitism was as common as baked beans. Since then, I've not been surprised at eruptions of the hatred of Jews. During the Connecticut Democratic primary between Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman and Ned Lamont, I was not, therefore, shocked by the emergence of centuries-old standard anti- Semitism. Lanny Davis, special counsel to President Clinton, and a Lieberman supporter, reminded us in the Aug. 8 Wall Street Journal that anti-Semites had Lieberman in their sights back on Dec. 7 when someone contributed to the Daily Kos Web site: "as everyone knows, Jews only care about the welfare of other Jews. And on July 8, this appeared on the Huffington Post Web site: "Lieberman cannot escape the religious bond he represents. Hell, his wife's name is Haggadah o...

  • (Just ask Henry Norr, a tech writer for the San Francisco Chronicle who lost his job after taking part in a 2003 antiwar protest.) Some top journalistsmost famously departing Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr. of the Washington Post-don't even think it's appropriate to take part in the ultimate civic activity, voting, because they believe it would compromise their ability to remain detached, impartial observers of civic affairs. From big national Web sites like The Huffington Post (huflSngtonpost.com) and Talking Points Memo (talkingpointsmemo.com), where readers by the hundreds comment on articles and even share tips on investigative reporting projects, to local efforts like Fresno Famous (fresnofamous.com), which found nightlife for twentysomethings in an unlikely venue, readers fee...
