CHESTERFIELD - Sonya T. Smith, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Howard University, has been appointed chair of the Department, effective July 1. A graduate of Matoaca High School, she is continuing the academic legacy of her parents, Emma B. Smith, Ph.D., and the late James W. Smith, Ph.D., who served as chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Department of History and International Studies, respectively, at Virginia State Uuniversity.
DaimlerChrysler Corporation Fund announces its plan to once again join forces with Academy Award-Nominated Actor Terrence Howard to donate a $38,000 grant to Settlement Music School to help fund their Kaleidoscope Pro-School Arts Enrichment Program. Howard, a long time musician, collaborated with DaimlerChrysler - a huge supporter of the arts and youth initiatives - to reach youth who often miss the opportunity to study arts through inner-city school programs. The announcement was made today by Frank Fountain, Senior Vice President, External Affairs and Public Policy (Auburn Hills), Chrysler Group at Settlement Music School's 'Mary Louise Curtis Branch' in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Joshua Academy, Evansville's only charter elementary school, has its eye on the soon-to-be-vacant Howard Roosa Elementary School on East Illinois Street. The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. plans to close Howard Roosa at the end of this school year. As part of the EVSC's realignment of the North High School district, Howard Roosa's pupils and staff will move to Evans School.
