Many in New York remember [Howard A. Roberts] as a collaborator with Alvin Ailey in the creation of the legendary dance work "Revelations." This was only one of his many achievements. He conducted the Broadway musical "Guys and Dolls" (1978 revival) and was choral supervisor of "The Great White Hope" (1968), vocal arranger for "Raisin" (1972) and was early musical director for Harry Belafonte.
During his early years in Cleveland, Roberts played a principal role in the American premiere of Karl Orf's opera "The Wise Woman" ("Die Kluge") at Karamu Theater, where he also sang the lead in The Prodigal Son" by Claude Debussy, both staged by Dr. Benno D. [Josephine] met and married Howard Roberts, Sr. and to this union one child, PoIa V Roberts, was born. During this period she served as a member of the AWVS (American Women in Volunteer Service-an organization fer those who had loved ones fighting in World War II) and sold stamps and war bonds on street corners and in local theatres. She was a 'Girl Reserve' with the YWCA, a member of the Pittsburgh Dance Council and on occasion during the 1930s was an extra dancer with the Brown Skin Models. In the 1940 s Josephine began working as a presser and later a display manager in a woman's dress shop in Pittsburgh's East Liberty section.
