• Owners of Burned Complex Are Sued ; Former Residents Claim Negligence in '07 Arson

Former Castle West Apartments residents have filed a lawsuit against the owners and managers of the complex, which was burned in a 2007 arson that killed two men and left hundreds homeless. The lawsuit, filed last month, claims owners Howard Parnes and Ted Sannella of Coolidge-Castle West Equities and Urban Property Management Inc. were negligent for not maintaining locking security doors that would have kept the suspected arsonist out. They also ignored the hundreds of calls from residents to police complaining of criminal activity around the complex, according to the lawsuit.

Commercial real estate partnership CLK/HP is in contract to acquire a 125,000-square-foot Class B property on Broadhollow Road in a deal that expands the Woodbury-based firm's reach in Melville. Large daily doses of vitamin E, long touted as a virtual wonder drug that could protect against cancer, heart disease, dementia and other ailments, increase the risk for prostate cancer among middle- aged men, according to a large federal study released Tuesday. The analysis of data from more than 35,000 healthy men concluded that those who took vitamin E every day at the relatively large dose levels commonly sold in drug, grocery and health food stores were 17 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer.
