BUCKSPORT - The conversion of the former Gardner Middle School into a 26-apartment complex for low-income elderly residents is nearly complete, and Gardner Commons is expected to open the apartments to new tenants early next month.
But the town still needs additional housing for the elderly, and last week town councilors set the wheels in motion to begin development of a second senior housing project.

St. Vincent's wants to build housing for the elderly, a development along the lines of The Redwoods in Mill Valley. [Don Dickenson] says the lack of services and infrastructure may pose a problem in making that goal become a reality. [Gary Giacomini], however, says St. Vincent's was ready to work toward solutions of the problems associated with developing housing for the elderly and a senior-care facility. After the Planning Commission's first vote, St. Vincent's contacted four companies to hash out prospects for a development under the 350 to 500-unit parameters. Giacomini says St. Vincent's could create a successful project that combines market-rate housing for the elderly with low- and very-low-income units and a care facility for seniors - if the county allows enough units (or their...

The policy of allowing people with disabilities to be placed in publicly subsidized housing projects for the elderly is a "betrayal to seniors" that needs to be stopped, state House Speaker James A. Amann, D-Milford, said Friday. "We've been getting more and more calls from seniors who feel intimidated and threatened ... mostly (by nonelderly disabled) people with substance abuse problems," Amann said.
Amann said he plans to propose legislation in the 2006 General Assembly session to ban the placement of nonelderly disabled people in complexes for senior citizens that are supported by state subsidies.

BETHLEHEM, Conn. In the little town of Bethlehem, a cloistered nun whose luminous blue eyes entranced Elvis Presley in his first on- screen movie kiss is praying for a Christmas miracle. Dolores Hart, who walked away from Hollywood stardom in 1963 to become a nun in rural Bethlehem, Conn., now finds herself back in the spotlight. But this time its all about serving the King of Kings, not smooching the King of Rock n Roll. The former brass factory that houses Mother Dolores and about 40 other nuns cloistered at the Abbey of Regina Laudis needs millions of dollars in renovations to meet fire and safety codes, add an elevator and make handicap accessibility upgrades. Like 73-year-old Mother Dolores, the orders nuns have taken a vow of stability with the intent to live, work and die at the...
