Central Illinois John Householder
THE BEST SPIN YOU CAN PUT ON THE LATEST flap involving Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder is that he has nasty friends. The worst is that his raw political instincts are out of control. Last week, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer got hold of a 109- page memo in which Speaker Householder's press secretary, with two other loyalists, lays out how to politically destroy Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell. Were it not so loaded with Machiavellian invective, the document would be funny.

PITY THE POOR POLITICAL CONTRIBUTOR. OHIO House Speaker Larry Householder comes in for a barrage of criticism, and the contributor pays the price. Speaker Householder was attacked in television ads that ran in some parts of Ohio in January. So now he is raising money to rebut those ads. Of course, attacks and counterattacks are normal in political ads. But here's the thing: Speaker Householder isn't even running for anything this year. His concern about his political well- being relates to his reported plan to pursue some statewide office in 2006.
