The current research hypothesizes that high school club participation increases future earnings. The data used to test this theory is the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 cohort, rounds 1-20 (NLSY79) (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2004), which collected information on individuals from 1979 through 2002. Initially, the survey was conducted on a representative sample of 12,686 persons. These individuals were surveyed annually from 1979 until 1994 and biannually thereafter. The current study employs an OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) regression model to assess the validity of the hypothesized conceptual model of the relationship between club participation and household income. The study shows significant findings that club participation correlates with higher future earnings of Americ...

Keeping household files well organized and up to date is a critical factor in demonstrating compliance with tax credit requirements. Creating a file management process that consists of periodic internal audits, ongoing training, and checklists can help you keep your paperwork in order. Create a dummy file, or a "perfect" file, that site staff can refer to at each step along the way to maintain order and clarity. If you discover missing or incomplete third-party verification of income, you will need to include a clarification form to verify the information. The exercise of reviewing and fixing household files offers a perfect opportunity to conduct realistic, site-specific training with site staff since the work volume is high. Put all of the paperwork that a compliance auditor is going ...

Financial illiteracy is prevalent in the United States, and low levels of financial literacy are associated with poor financial choices and negative economic outcomes. We examine previous work on the effect of financial education on household saving and find mixed results. Workplace financial education seminars positively affect household saving, but the size of this effect varies widely across studies. The effects of other financial education initiatives are less clear, highlighting the need for rigorous econometric evaluation of efforts to improve financial literacy.

[...] this culinary collective or relationship of plurality in planning, preparing, and presenting meals reinforced the complex nature of food and the ways in which the quotidian language of cooking performs as a crucial mode of communicating identities. According to Durodoye and Coker, this is most likely due to the racial politics in the United States that views people of African descent as a monolithic group.2 Arguing against the myth of homogeneity among and between people of the African diaspora, this article recaptures experiences that took place during the first five to seven years of my relationship with my husband (who today not only cooks for himself but also for our family), in order to consider some of the complexities that inhere in the homes of those living together acros...

Generally more is known about drug use and demand than about markets and supply, in large part because population survey data are available while market data are not. Although the household population represents a relatively small proportion of users of hard drugs, it represents a large proportion of the population using marijuana and participating in marijuana markets. This paper provides a description of marijuana market and acquisition patterns as reported by participants in the 2001 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. We find that most respondents obtain marijuana indoors (87%), from a friend or relative (89%), and for free (58%). Retail marijuana distribution appears to be embedded in social networks rather than being dominated by "professional" sellers. Despite these contrast...

The Survey of Consumer Finances was used to assess the explanatory power of self-control mechanisms, controlling for other important constructs from the standard life cycle model of saving. The analysis focused on saving goals, foreseeable expenses, and saving rules as mechanisms of self-control. Household saving behavior was strongly affected by mechanisms that help households practice self-control. Households that had saving rules were much more likely to spend less than income than those that did not have saving rules. This positive effect occurs at low, moderate, and high levels of household income and financial assets. Financial planners can use this information to help client households build financial wealth. Financial counselors and financial educators can incorporate informatio...
