The federal government must reduce its footprint in education and give local school systems more flexibility to craft curricula and measure student performance, school leaders from across the country told a House committee hearing Thursday Yohance Maqubela, chief operating officer at the District's Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science, said the current "national, generic model" isn't working, and Terry Grier, superintendent of Houston Independent School District, said lawmakers must find a "careful blend of accountability with flexibility.

Here is another report on the South Dakota Legislature from Tom Van Norman in the State House of Representatives. As reported earlier, House Bill 1227 would have created a four mile buffer zone around Mato Paha ("Bear Butte"). However, the House Local Government Committee killed the Bill on an 11-2 vote. A separate bill concerning referendum petitions for liquor licenses near Mato Paha, SB 113, which was killed by a 6-2 vote in the Senate State Affairs Committee.
