BAGHDAD - The U.S. command has ordered changes in flight operations after four helicopters were shot down in the last two weeks, the chief military spokesman said Sunday, acknowledging for the first time that the aircraft were lost to hostile fire. The crashes, which began Jan. 20, follow insurgent claims that they have received new stocks of anti-aircraft weapons - and a recent boast by Sunni militants that "God has granted new ways" to threaten U.S. aircraft.
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Hostile fire has killed more U.S. soldiers and Marines in Iraq in May than during each of the three previous months. If the trend continues, May will be one of the deadliest months for U.S. troops during the past year.
Trenton was a vital industrial powerhouse on the East Coast, and from its fiery furnaces poured an almost unbelievable plethora of products, such as rubber, steel, and ceramics, to be carried forth to waiting markets all over the world. [...] instead of the vehicle grinding to a halt, forcing the troops inside to either emerge and be exposed to hostile fire or wait like sitting ducks and hope for rescue, the runflat tires let the vehicle keep on operating until it reaches a safe location. In addition to the company's Defense and Security Department, other Hutchinson divisions manufacture rubber products found on nearly every automotive manufacturer in the world, as well as high-speed trains, shipbuilding and other industrial applications.
BAGHDAD - Fourteen U.S. soldiers were killed Wednesday when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a nighttime mission in northern Iraq, but the military said it appeared the aircraft was lost by mechanical problems and not from hostile fire. It was the Pentagon's worst single-day death toll in Iraq since January and indicated how forces are relying heavily on air power in offensives across northern regions after rooting out many militant strongholds in Baghdad and central regions.
BAGHDAD- A helicopter went down in northern Iraq today, killing all 14 U.S. soldiers aboard, the military said, the deadliest crash since January 2005. The military said initial indications showed the aircraft experienced a mechanical problem and was not brought down by hostile fire, but the cause of the crash was still under investigation.
HADITHA, Iraq The Iraqi woman drew her finger across her throat, begging through a military interpreter that her name not be used. She said she could be killed for talking to U.S. forces. Insurgents had already killed her husband. But, speaking from the safety of her home in this lawless city on the road to Syria, she wanted Marines to know what had happened. Later, she made a breakfast of eggs and bread for the handful of Iraqi soldiers helping guard the street.
