SALT LAKE CITY -- Scott Silverstein watches news about drug shortages as avidly as a meteorologist tracks potentially deadly storms. Recently, he's lain awake doing a mental inventory of cancer patients scheduled for treatment and the chemotherapy supplies they'll need, fretting about whether they match up. Recent drug shortages, says Silverstein, who directs the pharmacies at Huntsman Cancer Institute and the cancer hospital, are more than troublesome.

For more than a decade, an effective medication to treat stroke has been sitting on the shelves at hospital pharmacies, but only a tiny percentage of people get to the emergency room quick enough to receive it. Now doctors think they have at least a partial solution to the problem: Extend the time window for treatment from three hours after symptoms start to 4 1/2 hours.
Unrelated business income tax Many activities engaged in by otherwise tax-exempt hospitals may be subject to unrelated business income tax (UBIT) under the IRC section 513 regulations. Income is subject to UBIT when derived from a trade or business activity regularly carried on by the organization not substantially related to performance of the organization's exempt functions. The exempt purposes of a nonprofit hospital are charitable, educational and scientific. The IRS is training agents to examine pharmacies, lab services, research and other activities that may serve private interests.
CHICAGO - Two revolutionary new drugs are in hospital pharmacies this week, a tangible sign that years of research into targeted approaches to fighting cancer are finally paying off, at least in a limited way. The new drugs are a far cry from the breakthrough that was predicted in 1998, when Nobel laureate James Watson was quoted as saying cancer would be cured "in two years" as a result of laboratory evidence that tumors would vanish if their blood supply was choked off.
