DERBY -- Griffin Hospital will go European in 10 months when a new, $3 million kitchen is completed and patients and staff get expanded menus with items like brick-oven pizza. Construction started last week on a new dining area and kitchen. The project involves updating Griffin's patient food service delivery system, said hospital vice president William C. Powanda.
The hospital will institute Burlodge, a patient-focused system with expanded menu selections. Burlodge is the brand name for a meal- delivery system that originated in Europe.

This proposed rule would reform Medicare regulations that CMS has identified as unnecessary, obsolete, or excessively burdensome on health care providers and suppliers, as well as certain regulations under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA). Between now and 2015, as the baby boomers retire, American industry will need between 10 and 15 million new workers, says the National Organization on Disability in Washington, D.C. There are currently 22 million working-age Americans with disabilities, and studies show that two-thirds of the disability population wants to and can work, the organization says. Employees hired through Project Search now work in the hospital's psychiatry services department, food-and-nutrition services, the hospital laboratory, the sterile processing department, materials management department, and environmental services department, Mangiaracina says.

LEWISTON -- Central Maine Medical Center is contracting out its food services to Maryland-based Sodexo Inc.

James Henry Batt, an active churchman who was vice president of operations for North American Food Services, died Tuesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 93.
Born in North Buffalo, Mr. Batt was one of 13 children of State Supreme Court Justice Paul J. Batt and Antoinette Czerwinski Batt, an accomplished pianist.

PORTSMOUTH - On Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010 the eyes of God smiled down on our beloved Ethel Mitchell Joyner. Ethel was born in Petersburg, Va., to the late Louis and Eva Mitchell. Ethel had an underlying faith, a diligent servant of ministry in Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, until illness prevented her full participation but not her concern. A longtime resident of Portsmouth, Ethel retired from the Department of Food Services of Portsmouth General Hospital.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory, two sisters, Lucile Snyder (Abe), Fredericksburg, Va., and Gloria Jean Anderson, Pittsburgh; a host of nieces, newphews and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, James Joyner and brother, Lawrence Mitchell.
