Boone Hospital Center unveiled an expanded emergency department Tuesday morning. The $1.8 million renovation adds four new patient rooms to the ER, giving it a total of 16 rooms, plus a new nurse's station and triage area.
The addition is designed to provide a better experience for patients who come to the Ann Street entrance with anything from a bloody nose to a heart attack.

Traditionally, staff members have relayed information about patients through verbal communication, paper charts and visual tools such as white boards. But as both hospitalwide clinical information systems and specialized emergency department information systems (EDIS) have grown more sophisticated, many hospitals are replacing the white boards and paper charts with automated tracking systems and computer displays. SSM St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis has hired Dr. David Lickerman as the medical director of its emergency department. The hospital also hired Robert "Arlen" Blaylock as the department's clinical director.
Lickerman previously practiced emergency medicine since July 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield. Prior to that he spend 26 years at Christian Hospitals NE-NW in St. Louis, serving as associate director of emergency of medical services from 1995 to 2005.

Excela Health Frick Hospital's emergency room was temporary closed to incoming patients on Saturday night after thousands of gallons of liquid oxygen were released outside the Mt. Pleasant facility.
The hospital issued a Code Black after the valve on one of the hospital's oxygen tanks malfunctioned about 11:50 p.m. Authorities were able to seal the leak, and no patients were evacuated.
