But no hospitals can shut down in Illinois until a nine-member state board gives the green light. The panel - the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board - wields a rare authority over hospital closures, one that doesn't exist in most states. The board is scheduled to vote today on Cook County's proposal to shut down Oak Forest Hospital and turn it into an outpatient center. It rejected a similar request in May.

The closures are part of a 30-year development plan for Memorial that the City Council approved in January, although construction of new buildings isn't expected to start for another five to 10 years.

  • PHOENIX, Ariz., May 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry made the following statement today on Secretary Principi's announcement of VA hospital closures: It's outrageous that the Bush Administration would try to close any VA hospital when it has told 500,000 veterans that there's no room in the system for them. We shouldn't have to choose between hospitals in Ohio and Nevada. All of our veterans deserve quality affordable health services.

  • The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System is opening three around-the-clock urgent care centers primarily in areas affected by hospital closures, with the help of nearly $18 million in state grants. North Shore-LIJ on Monday said it obtained a $8.2 million grant to open a 6,700-square-foot urgent care center in Rego Park, Queens, near the site of St. John's Hospital, which closed in 2009, and a 5,500-square-foot center in Bethpage, where the system said there's demand.

  • Councilman [Thomas White Jr.] said, "Given the potential for Albany to further short the City of its share of stimulus dollars, as they have done with nearly $200 million in Medicaid funds, the City Council and the Bloomberg Administration needs to come up with a strong position in response to the State in order to make sure that City of New York gets its fair share and stops stealing stimulus dollars from New Yorkers who need it the most. Our State and Federal legislators must prevent Albany from continuing this injustice to the City of New York. Councilman White also said, "In addition to taking a strong position against Albany, we must seek a clear interpretation and definition from our Congressional Delegation of what New York City is entitled to and should expect from the recently...

  • Two reports this week say that New Jersey residents should brace for more hospital closings. Hospital closures and job cuts aren't welcome news for any community, but they're a necessary reality for New Jersey hospitals," said Betsy Ryan, president of the New Jersey Hospital Association. State hospitals last year reversed 2008's economic tailspin, but the outlook is still very uncertain, the group said Thursday in its 33rd annual report.

  • Your administration thereafter provided assurances to my office that all of the ambulance tours previously operated by the two remaining hospitals would continue to be covered. I once again urge your office and the Fire Department to evaluate the adequacy of EMS services in Queens. I must also renew my unanswered request of Commissioner Scoppetta to publish data regarding ambulance response and the turn-around times for the Queens communities affected by these hospital closures," insisted Comptroller [Bill Thompson].
