  • T he contestants arrived. One by one, cars pulled up at the curb of Norfolk Botanical Garden's Rose Garden Hall and let them out: tiny Jean Kenneally, tall Cajun Moon, the single-monikered Shenandoah and more - many, many more. Roses in bud, in full flower, with thick stems or thin, shiny leaves or dull. Dress was casual - name tags tied under necks, feet in water, trundled in buckets, in baskets, in wagons. Most made a less-than- glamorous entrance, except for their perfume, which trailed them everywhere.

  • For many people, domestic bliss does not involve cleaning, home repairs, or yard work. But that doesn't mean that their vision of a happy home involves a dirty, broken-down house with an unkempt yard. "It's an opportunity to teach about horticulture and its relationship to life." Murphy said she is guided by the words of master gardener and former Dispatch columnist Michael Leech: "Teachable moments from the seed to the salad bowl. A powerful lesson was learned by the youngsters who, with the help of masters, saw their efforts create a thing of beauty. Some of the flowers for the event were donated by deMonye's and Cutherburts greenhouses. Some of the beautification supplies and tools were loaned by Keep Columbus Beautiful.

  • I was shopping at Churchland High School's annual plant sale when I saw the new compost bins out back. The former pile of biodegradables now has a permanent concrete structure. The project was the brainchild of horticulture student and Eagle Scout Landon Prever. Landon built the structure over spring break with help from Portsmouth Public Schools, Sasser Construction, University Contractors, Sussex Development, CPG, TowneBank and Batchelder and Collins. Landon, of Castle Heights, hopes to major in horticulture at Virginia Tech. Instructor Louise Roesser and her students are most grateful. Despite overcast weather, Centenary...
