A few weeks ago I reported on the garden started by Churchland Elementary School fourth-graders. Teacher Linda Francis told me when the unusually hot weather killed the original plantings, Tommy Heath of Norfolk County Feed & Seed replaced them at no cost. Tommy enjoys teaching horticulture to kids, both at his business and in the classroom. He once asked a group of third-graders if they knew the definition of a weed, and one boy answered "It's a plant growing in the wrong place." Tommy said it was the best weed description he had ever heard. Tommy's parents John and Ellen Heath started Norfolk County Feed & Seed back in 1947 and the establishment is known for its old country-store feel and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Drop by 1110 Airline Blvd. and see for yourself.

This final rule establishes the process and procedures to certify a qualifying college or university as a Hispanic-Serving Agricultural Colleges and Universities (HSACU) institution. Pittsburgh and other former industrial cities are ripe for a growing form of redevelopment that could turn rusting landscapes into useful public spaces, experts say.
We're seeing a lot of it, and on the verge of seeing more," said Patrick Cullina, the former vice president of horticulture and park operations for New York City's elevated park, the High Line, who spoke on Saturday in Pittsburgh at the Native Plant & Sustainability Conference hosted by Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
