A few weeks ago, I wrote about early school days and my experiences in a one-room school. Several readers told me about their school days, too. For most of us, our first real memories center around school. A couple of readers asked me about my mention of a hornbook. It was new to them, and we're all too young to have had one.
This rare hornbook is a wooden board with parchment paper glued to the surface. A thin sheet of horn was placed over the top of the paper to make it durable. Instead of using expensive paper, children could trace the letters with a dry quill pen.
