Through it all, we have maintained the same mission and commitment to making a real difference in our community," she said. "We've returned the trust you placed in us. I can't tell you how grateful I am. "For 40 years she has made this a reality," said [Jennifer Granholm]. "You chose to stay with it. It makes me so proud as governor that this organization exists. I wish we could say we've gotten over racism, over division, (but) the most pragmatic action we can take is providing opportunity for all. Education is the great 'leveler.' What Focus: HOPE is doing is giving freedom of choice. Thank you for that selfless act. It's a privilege to be here." "We continuously update our education programs so that our programs are relevant and employers want our graduates," he said. "I'm proud to...
After another uncertain offseason for the Big 12, there is finally some talk about playing actual games. At least from the coaches.
Although there's continual pressure, we can't sit back and wait for the world to come to us," [Tim Duperron] said. "We have to find ever more creative ways to deliver more with less, and I think we've been very successful at that. "We're going to turn this thing around, and I think that people are optimistic," [Eleanor Josaitis] said. She sees the "One D" advertising and marketing campaign of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, marketing Detroit as an appealing destination for 21-34-year-olds, as both optimistic and hopeful. Focus: HOPE has joined with strategic planning specialists in the area to revamp the manufacturing programs so they offers higher levels of technical capability. One example centers on computer-aided design (CAD). Focus: HOPE has always had some el...
The one-year scholarships have yet to be actually awarded, however, because Focus: HOPE has so far only managed to raise $200,000 of its $600,000 goal. Paul Erickson, coordinator of special projects at Focus: HOPE, said the Success Scholarship Program got started because government funding for student tuition in the MTI program (which once amounted to 80 percent) has declined in the last five to eight years. Tuition for the 31-week, full-time MTI program is $9,250, and the 20-week pre-engineering program is $4,000. The government funding used to be about $7,000 per student. Today, it ranges from about $1,500 to $2,000 per student. More than 90 percent of the students who come to Focus: HOPE have a demonstrable financial need and cannot pay for their education. The Founders Scholars scho...
We consistently try to raise money for scholarships, so the students who are financially unable can attend the programs at the Machinist Training Institute, PAST TRACK, the Information Technology Center or even the Center for Advanced Technologies," said William Jones, Jr., CEO. "The population we serve generally has difficulty supporting that on tuition basis, so scholarships are extremely important. "The difficult economic times make it more of a challenge to raise that kind of money, but they also illustrate the need at the same time," he said; "So, the same circumstances that make it more challenging to raise money makes the need more acute to raise scholarships. So it cuts both ways." "This timetable did sort of fit," he said. "There's not a great deal of conflict with other even...
Listen, Young Readers, let's take a few minutes to discuss the art of focusing. Okay? Check out [Barack Obama Sr.]'s hands on the greeting card (on this page) that reads: "We need to remember, there is nothing more important than HOPE!" These CaIdS1On recycled material, are by Tomato Cards (DCI Studios). Now, lef s look at Obama's fingers. Do you see how they are positioned, with each finger of the left hand lightly touching the opposite finger of the right hand? What Obama is doing is practicing a hand mudra, which is a form of yoga that helps to focus and rejuvenate him. This is something we teach our children to help them focus, especially when they are going to take an exam. People who practice this art learn how to become calm, so that nothing will distract them, and they will able...
We're evaluating everything that we do here, right now," said Focus: HOPE communications director Kathy Moran. "We're updating all our education programs. There's a lot going on here. "From my standpoint, it's a great event for bringing the media to our campus, to see what we're doing," she said. "And it's a great way to bring high school students here." "We have education and training programs here, and we are putting them through extensive program reviews to make sure our graduates are graduating with skills that will be useful to them in the future," she said. "We want to make sure they're being trained for jobs that will still be here in the future."
The exhibit reflects the MOCAD mission of being at the forefront of contemporary culture. Viewers will see photographs from locations as diverse as Cranbrook Educational Community, Detroit Winter Blast, a Caribbean Mardi Gras art studio, University of Michigan Campus, Historic Eastern Market, FestiFools Parade in Ann Arbor, and downtown Detroit among other sites. Each student worked toward the creation of a photographic group exhibition and a digital portfolio. This program has not only provided these young people with marketable skills, it has also given them an outlet for self-awareness, discipline, and creative expression," said Annette Vanover, manager of Community Arts. "It's been a privilege working with them and watching them grow artistically and socially. The Excel program, l...
Our walk reminds our supporters of what we can accomplish when we work together in a spirit of respect and harmony," said Eleanor Josaitis, who co-founded Focus: HOPE with the late Father William Cunningham in 1968. "Father Cunningham loved to look around the crowd to see thousands of people of all ages, races and backgrounds coming together in support of civil rights. Each year we do this, we are reminded of the importance of our mission and the work that still needs to be done. "Focus: HOPE's education and training programs were created to help people overcome poverty," said Keith Cooley, Focus: HOPE CEO. "We have thousands of graduates who came to Focus: HOPE seeking a better life. They are now successful professionals providing a comfortable living for themselves and their familie...
