MINNEAPOLIS - Mary Seidel remembers when Halloween was a one-day event with homemade costumes and pillowcases that served as "trick or treat" containers. Not anymore.
ACANAAN LAKE LAVAIL Acanaan Lake LaVail was born at home in Santa Fe on January 27th, 1993, to Lauren and Adam LaVail. PROVO -- It appears I've been looking at Halloween wrong for years. Apparently it isn't just homemade costumes and pillowcases full of candy that last 'till Thanksgiving. And forget the spooky noises, creaking doors and terrifying shower scenes.
The Teays Valley Newcomers & Neighbors Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. The Oct. 12 meeting will be held at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Wendy Herbert will be presenting a fall fashion show with clothing from Jockey Person to Person. Some of the ladies from the club will be modeling. Some members may be dressing in Halloween costumes, which is optional. There will be prizes. The ladies of the church will be preparing a home-cooked meal with homemade desserts and drinks to round out the luncheon. A $15 donation for lunch would be appreciated. One of my favorite days is just around the corner. I love Halloween because it provides an opportunity to express our creativity and try on a different identity for a few hours. Growing up, my mother made my Halloween costumes. I don't recall ever having an off-the-shelf costume. My all-time-favorite mom-made Halloween costume was the pumpkin. Using orange cloth stretched over a wire frame and stuffed with newspaper, she fashioned a big, plump pumpkin. I wore orange tights and a green hat to finish it off in style.
