I feel in the mood for a Portland Thanksgiving with our younger daughter this year.
When the kids were home, we always stayed at my folks' house and I helped Mom cook the dinner, which meant lots of leftovers. Now a Portland Thanksgiving means one of those holidays that include dinner at a nice restaurant with somebody else roasting the turkey, followed by shopping till you drop and then curling up with Christmas magazines full of ideas. I'm glossing over the fact that shopping won't be much fun, since we all agreed that this Christmas is to be only homemade or revamped thrift store gifts.

I think I'm just about ready for Christmas.
Last year, we agreed that this one would be only homemade gifts, or refurbished, glammed-up thrift shop items. The purpose behind the decision wasn't to save money, but a more lofty ideal. By spreading the preparation time out over the year, the giver would be thinking about the receiver all the time the gift was being stitched, or glued, or hammered. And if you saw just the perfect idea in a thrift shop, you'd be imagining the pleasure it would bring a family member as you brought it back to brand-new glory. None of this dashing out and buying something expensive because it was three days before Christmas and you didn't have a gift yet for somebody on the list.

BRANFORD -- If there's one thing the folks at the Branford Compassion Club know how to do, it's throw an event, especially their annual benefit Holiday Breakfast Buffet, which takes place Sunday from 8 a.m.-noon at St. Therese's Church Hall, 105 Leetes Island Road. Not only is there an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, eggs, strata, sausage, bacon, pastries, bagels and cream cheese, fruit, juice, coffee, and tea, but there are also theme raffle baskets which make great holiday gifts, homemade Christmas cookies and Maine-made balsam wreaths for sale.
The breakfast raises funds so that BCC can continue to assist homeless felines in the community, by providing veterinary care, food and shelter, and finding homes for those deemed adoptable.

Have you ever given homemade gifts for Christmas?
I have a poem I wrote that I print out, put in a frame and wrap it for gifts. I have also made crocheted angels and customized some ornaments in the past."Julie GyorkosLeRoy

Holiday time is baking time. There is no more fun to be had in the kitchen than at Christmas time. Cookies, cookies, cookies. Cookies rule at Christmas. Cookies for reindeer. Cookies for gifts. Cookies for cookie swaps. Cookies for everyone.
One ingredient that is found in almost every cookie is vanilla. Did you know that you can make your own vanilla? Homemade vanilla is better than any vanilla you can get at the store. Use a few extra vanilla beans and you can make gourmet double strength vanilla. Homemade vanilla in pretty bottles also makes great Christmas gifts for family and friends.

A tight budget is a good excuse to look to your pantry for gift- giving inspiration.
Gifts from the kitchen, such as a box of homemade Christmas cookies or jars of jazzed up hot cocoa mix, are easy and inexpensive to prepare; moreover, they add a personal touch in this era of gift cards.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Deodorant, toothpaste and homemade cookies don't seem like Christmas gifts that most people would holler over in delight.
But when Gloria Morgan, 79, opened the door of her mobile home recently to find a present containing those very items, she couldn't help but shriek in appreciation.
