Amazing what an old-fashioned country church auction can accomplish. Like getting some generous soul to pay $1,300 for five gallons of homemade chicken noodle soup. It happened, says Mary May, a steering committee member with "Die Kirche Auktion Fest" (church auction fest in German). She married Gilbert B. Kruser on March 30, 1948, at St. Matthew's Church, Patch Grove. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish, its council of Catholic Women and a retiree of the Jamestown Township Fire Department Auxiliary. The menu at First Ebenezer Baptist Church's soup kitchen had a couple of options Friday. Patrons could choose from among a ham, bologna and cheese or peanut butter sandwich, homemade chicken noodle soup and salad.
The United Methodist Women of Messiah United Methodist Church, 7401 Furnace Branch Road, will host a Christmas bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15. The event will feature a silent auction and the sale of crafts, nearly new items, homemade baked goods and chicken noodle soup and other lunch foods.
