  • I first began using homemade cleaning products back when I wrote for a newspaper in Texas. I did a story on a couple of women who were trying to spread the word about "green" cleaning alternatives. I used homemade cleaners for a long time after that - I loved how much simpler and cheaper they were. And they work! Later, I got out of the habit as I worked outside the home. I was "too busy" to prepare the homemade cleaners and would just grab something off the shelf at the store instead.

Two weeks ago everybody was asking whose stupid idea this was, with pointed looks in my direction, while I reminded them it was a joint decision. But we all agreed that a few days before the big event, it started to be enjoyable. Even fun. OK, so there were a few labor-intensive all-nighters, when some of us struggled to meet the deadline, but it was worth it at gift-opening time.

  • Some time back, I found a recipe for making homemade yeast in an old cookbook. The recipe was puzzling and yet tantalizing. I had to decipher it! Way back in the yonder mists of time, people discovered there was this stuff in the air that worked magic to create goodies like bread and beer: yeast. To capture wild yeast from the air, get a big jar or bowl (non-metal), 1 1/2 cups of warm water and 2 cups of flour. Stir it and then let it sit undisturbed while you "catch" natural microorganisms. You can cover it with a mesh material, but be sure that it will allow air into the container. You need the fresh air.

  • Andy Gabbard is best known as the guitarist for Cincinnati retro- rock trio Buffalo Killers, but last year he decided to branch out. He began performing solo, which opened the door to several other projects, including his participation in Daytonian Mike Perkins' Esther Caulfield Orchestra. We've always got time off with Buffalo Killers," Gabbard said. "We do a lot, but my brother, Zach, has kids, so we're not really that busy of a band. I always have one or two weekends in a month free to do something else.

  • While many of us might be scrambling this weekend to put addresses on our store-bought Christmas cards and get them in the mail, those with a creative flair probably started planning months ago for cards with a personal touch. We asked readers to send us their homemade Christmas cards, and we were amazed by their creativity and style.

It features a cocoa layer cake that uses the best cocoa, all egg yolks to give it its fullest flavor, and, to finish, a sweet injection of melted chocolate and cream. Easy to make, it is at once fudgy moist and soft within, and becomes encased in a thin glaze of chocolate that forms b...

  • Iraqi insurgents have turned their country's roads into ever shifting minefields They move their roadside bombs daily, even hourly, stalking US troops The US Army is vehicle-dependent in Iraq.
